It was recently announced by the GIJoe Collectors club that it would be holding it's annual collectors convention in New Orleans Louisiana. This was after it had announced a few months earlier that it was scheduled to be there, but due to the tragic events of Hurricane Katrina, it would not be held there.
The news of this received mixed reviews in the collecting community, with many individuals feeling that N.O. is simply not ready for the convention and others that it is not just a great place to have it, but a patriotic duty.
We have all undoubtedly seen the photos, videos and reports of terrible destruction in the media and have all heard it will take some time to rebuild. However, the convention is being held in downtown N.O., which while affected, is already in operating condition and by summer should be fine. Sadly, the division in the collecting community has grown even stronger, causing many contentious debates to take place on many different online forums, with my flared tempers. While many parts of N.O. may not be back up and running by summer, I am quite confident that the downtown will be.
I am writing this article about two miles from Ground Zero, an I have an idea of what the people, stores, restaurants and hotels are going through in New Orleans. I know the circumstances are much different, but the feeling of community and help is the same.
Hurricane or no Hurricane, N.O. is a great place for the convention: it offers the world famous DDAY Museum, several on the Civil War, great jazz, terrific food and a nightlife. Not only do I believe it will be a great place to have a convention, I think it is exactly in the spirit of GIJoe to have one there.
